Talks Between the Oneida Tribe and New York Missed the Casino Issue Deadline

On May 1, 2007, the deadline passed for the Oneida Indian Tribe and New York to discuss the Oneida Tribe’s Turning Stone Casino and Resort Facility issue.

The 2 parties were supposed to meet on Monday, April 30, 2007 to push through with the negotiations for the new agreement regarding the operation of the Turning Stone Casino.

Last Monday was the deadline for the Oneida Indian Tribe to give a request before the U.S. Department of Interior to halt the department’s review of the Turning Stone Casino’s operating permit.

On June 14, 2007, the federal government will decide anew whether to dissolve their approval of the gaming compact in 1993 which gave permission to the Turning Stone Casino gambling facility to open in Verona, located between Syracuse and Utica.

Both the state of New York and the Oneida Indian Tribe commented that the U.S. Department of Interior has no authority to review an agreement.

While the Oneida Tribe commented that the agreement is binding, the state said that the gaming compact made between former Governor Mario Cuomo and the Oneida Tribe was not valid from the start because it was not validated by the New York Legislature.
