Stockbridge-Munsee Plans to Build a Casino in Shawano County

On August 25th, 2007, the Stockbridge-Munsee Tribe of Mohican Indians announced their plans to construct a $100 million, 300,000 square foot gambling and resort facility in Shawano County located in Bowler.

Tribal Head Robert Chicks said that this move represents the next thing in gambling. The new establishment will help their tribe achieve financial success in the increasingly tough gambling market in Wisconsin and even outside of the state.

The new gambling establishment will include 1,400 slot machines, 32 casino table games and a bingo facility. Aside from that, the casino project will have two restaurants, an entertainment area, a 13,000 square ft. meeting space and a 292,000 square ft. parking space. Chicks said that they are expecting that their new facility will satisfy their customers need.

The Tribe also plans to hire 200 new employees. Shawano County’s planning and development director Tim Reed commented that the tribe is already considered to be the county’s biggest employer. Construction on the site will immediately start with the parking garage.

The work will start in two phases and is expected to be completed in 2009. The casino facility is located on County A in Bowler. The Stockbridge Tribe’s plan will add another gaming facility in Wisconsin. The Oneida Tribe’s Bingo and Casino facility in Green Bay has a 174, 416 square ft. gambling area which contains 3,200 slot machines and video poker machines.

The Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin spokesperson Phil Wisneski said that they do not classify the new casino as a threat. The president of Walsh Bishop of Minneapolis and the project head, Dennis Walsh said that he is happy to be working on the casino project.
