Protest Group Starts Anti-Casino Campaign in Sedgwick County

The organization “No Casinos in Sedgwick County” officially started their anti-casino campaign on June 12, 2007 at Century II, one of the biggest proposed locations for the destination casino. The “No Casinos in Sedgwick County Organization” is made of business and religious organizations who believe that a casino in Sedgwick County is a bad idea.

David Welch said that building a casino is bad for small businesses. The organization’s goal is to inform the public about what they believe will happen if the casino proposal passes. They hope that a no vote will convince the state legislators that the gambling casino is a bad idea. But the organization knows that they will face a tough battle. They have fewer funds compared to supporters of the casino plans.

Mark Kahrs said that the casino supporters will try to influence the outcome with their money, but the residents of the county have their own opinions and they must decide their position regarding the casino issue for themselves.

Wichita Greyhound Park owner, Phil Ruffin Jr., is also planning to launch a massive advertising campaign for the casino. The voters in Sedgwick County will vote on the issue on August 7, 2007.

Two issues will be on the ballot – whether or not to permit a casino in the state and whether or not to allow the slot machines at the Wichita Greyhound Park.
