Canadian Offshore Online Gambling Laws May Change in the Future

While it’s no secret that the US has shown it is highly against offshore internet gambling, Canada doesn’t share this same perspective.  Online gambling is legal in Canada.  Canadian gambling websites are only operated by provincial governments.  However, there are an estimated 2,000 offshore internet poker rooms and casinos that are currently being enjoyed by Canadian players.

Many of these offshore gambling sites purposely target players from Canada.  The reason is it allows them to make a lot of money without having to pay taxes to the Canadian government.  On average, the annual amount of money that is gambled at offshore sites by Canadians is approximately $4 billion (CAD).

A report in the Canadian newspaper, The Vancouver Sun, said that that the laws in Canada may change one day if economic interests start to play a role.  The economic disadvantage resulting from licensed Canadian operators having to compete against unlicensed operators, may give the government more incentive to deal with the issue of offshore casinos.
