Gaming facilities in Nevada earned a total of $911 million in September 2009, an 8.9% drop-off from the $1 billion they won in September 2008. The month of September was the 21st straight month of year-over-year, monthly gaming declines in Nevada.
The news was a little better in Las Vegas, which produces more than half of Nevada’s gambling revenue. Las Vegas casino facilities won a total of $506 million, just a 3.5% drop from a year ago, according to Nevada’s Gaming Control Board (GCB) revenue report released on November 10th, 2009.
Breaking down the Gaming Control Board revenue report, Nevada’s casino table games and sports book actually showed considerable improvement compared to last year. Casino table games, supported by substantial gains in baccarat, roulette and craps, produced $317 million, a 3.7% improvement from a year ago.
The game of baccarat was especially very lucrative as casino facilities won $98.9 million, about thirty percent more than a year ago. Nevada’s craps tables won about twenty percent more, while roulette improved its win by twenty-eight percent. Nevada’s sports books welcomed the start of the football season with open arms and players responded by opening their wallets.
Football accounted for $24 million of the total $29.2 million won by Nevada sports books, a health twelve percent improvement over the past year. slot machines, while accounting for sixty-four percent of the state’s total gaming revenue, produced only $583 million in September 2009, a 14.7% slide from a year ago.
Only penny slot machines posted an improvement in revenue, a slight 0.6% increase. Nevada’s poker rooms held their own as their rake-the total amount withheld from each cash pot-slipped to about $10.4 million, just 3.5% from a year ago.
