On June 30th, 2008, one of the partners for a casino proposal in Wyandotte County has recently pulled out of the project. Mohegan Resorts Kansas LLC, a subsidiary of the Mohegan Tribal Gambling Authority from Connecticut commented that it has bought for an undiscovered amount of money 1/3 interest in the proposed Legends Sun casino project by Olympia Gaming from Las Vegas. RED Development, LLC, the owners of the Legends shopping and entertainment district at the Village West in Wyandotte, become a minority owner in the casino plan with its 1/3 interest. The casino would be near a retail facility north of the Kansas Speedway.
The Kansas Lottery’s Director of Gaming Facilities, Keith Kocher commented that the change in owner is not expected to have any significant effect to the organization’s application for a contract to operate a state owned casino. 5 companies are bidding for a single contract in Wyandotte County that is expected to be given out in September. Olympia officials confirmed the sale of their share in the Kansas project.
Olympia manages Casino Fandango in Carson City, Nevada and has several gambling developments in Nevada like a resort facility and retail project, also named Legends, in partnership with RED in Sparks, Nevada. The Mohegan Tribe manages the Mohegan Sun casinos in Uncasville, Connecticut and at the Pocono, Downs in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
The Indian tribe’s three million square feet resort and convention facility in Connecticut includes one of the biggest casino facilities in the world with more than 300,000 square feet of gambling floor. Kansas City’s biggest casino gaming floor, at the Ameristar casino, has 140,000 square feet of gambling space.
